Howard Payne University
For over 100 years, Howard Payne University (HPU) and Brownwood have partnered together to help make the Heart of Texas area one of the best places to live in the state. Through the years, many of our graduates have chosen to invest their lives in this community. HPU alumni serve in a variety of key leadership roles. The late Groner Pitts, who burst onto the scene in the late 1940s as an exuberant yelling leader for HPU, was one of Brownwood's most vocal supporters. HPU grads serve our community as bank presidents, school superintendents, doctors, lawyers and business and civic leaders.

Why do they choose to stay here? Quite simply, most say Brownwood feels like home. As students, they value the warm hospitality extended by our residents. And they appreciate a community that supports their activities, whether it's a choir concert in HPU's historic Mims Auditorium, a football game at legendary Gordon Wood Stadium or part-time jobs or opportunities for service projects offered by local businesses.
Just as Brownwood supports Howard Payne, the University supports the community. When local high-school students begin to look at colleges, they can start their search right at home. HPU offers a variety of academic programs, including the nationally recognized Douglas MacArthur Academy of Freedom honors program. HPU also offers a degree completion program for adults, with classes offered throughout the day and evening to fit into their busy schedules. Area residents also enjoy a variety of cultural and sporting events featuring the talents of HPU students, faculty and staff.
Yes, Howard Payne University and Brownwood are a good fit, working hand in hand to meet the needs of our community.
